The 10th National Moot Court Competition will take place in Athens, on 17-19 May 2024, under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice. Its venues will be the Athens Court of Appeal and the Court of Audit.
The Competition is the only simulation of the Greek justice system and takes place every year with the participation of students from all three Law Schools of the country. At the same time, the involvement of dozens of academics and members of the judiciary at all stages of the Competition ensures high quality and realistic conditions. In the tenth edition of the Competition, for the fifth consecutive year, all three jurisdictions: Criminal, Civil and Administrative will be simulated, attempting a holistic approach to the Greek judicial system.
An innovation of the 10th EDED (National Moot Court Competition) is the introduction of a Maritime Law Moot Court, within the proceedings of the civil courts. The Maritime Law Moot Court is a pioneering undertaking for EDED. The aim of the undertaking is to highlight a branch of law that is particularly important for Greece, as well as to further develop the Competition.
This year’s edition is a milestone in the history of the Competition, as it will be the 10th anniversary National Moot Court Competition of ELSA Greece, giving us the opportunity to honour ten years of organising it and of its contribution to the students of the country’s three Law Schools, as well as to the contributors to the organisation over all these years, who are the cornerstone of the Competition’s successful course.
The competition is the only simulation of the Greek justice system and takes place every year with the participation of students from all three Law Schools of the country, academic professors and members of the judiciary. It is organised by the Greek branch of the international association ELSA. The competition was founded in 2015 in Thessaloniki.
In line with the International Moot Court Competitions, the competition includes, on the one hand, a written phase, in which participants submit pleadings (depending on the jurisdiction to which the case at hand belongs) and, on the other hand, an oral phase before a moot court, which is composed each time of legal scholars and real judges.
Since its start in 2015, the Competition has taken place every year under the auspices and with the support of the most important bodies of the country’s legal community, such as the Ministry of Justice, the Greek Ombudsman, the European Parliament Office in Greece, the National Commission for Human Rights, the country’s three Law Schools, the Athens, Thessaloniki and Rodopi Bar Associations, the Centre of European and Constitutional Law – Themistocles and Dimitris Tsatsos Foundation, the Maragopoulou Foundation, Sakkoulas Publications S.A. and Nomiki Bibliothiki, among others.
In 2017 the Competition was hosted for the first time in the courtrooms of the Council of State and the Athens Court of First Instance. Since then, the steady support and excellent cooperation with the country’s Supreme Administrative Court have continued, while in recent years we have had the honour of also hosting the Competition in the courtrooms of the Athens Court of Appeal.
The support given to the Competition by the country’s Judiciary and the National School of Judges is an honour. Students of the National School of Judges take part in assessing the pleadings during the written phase, while sitting judges take on the role of judges on the panel during the oral phase, as in the past Mses and Messrs K. Sakellaropoulou, D. Kranis, D. Raikos, M. Chatzigeorgiou, D. Pyrgakis, M. Babili and N. Nikolakis, among others.
In addition, the academic prestige of the Competition is ensured by the participation at every stage of the event of recognised academics as members of the Academic Committee, Coaches, Judges and Markers. In recent years, respected professors from all of the country’s Law Schools have taken part in the Competition’s work, such as Messrs and Mses G. Gerapetritis, K. Christakakou-Fotiadi, S. Vlachopoulos, E. Prevedourou, A. Papadamakis, E. Symeonidou-Kastanidou, D. Babiniotis, P. Arvanitakis, S. Koutnatzis and A. Triantafyllou.
At the same time, lawyers, trainee lawyers, and postgraduate and doctoral students contribute to various aspects of the Competition, offering expertise and material support. It is therefore clear that the National Moot Court Competition is an event that enjoys the support of the entire legal community of the country.
A high point in the development and prestige of the Competition was the granting of the auspices of Her Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic, Ms Katerina Sakellaropoulou, to the 6th Competition and its renewal for the 7th, 8th and 9th National Moot Court Competitions.
The 10th National Moot Court Competition will take place in Athens, on 17-19 May 2024, under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice. Its venues will be the Athens Court of Appeal and the Court of Audit.

This year, for the tenth consecutive year, the National Moot Court Competition (EDED) is set to be organised in Athens. At the same time, the involvement of dozens of academics and members of the judiciary at all stages of the Competition ensures high quality and realistic conditions.
The Competition includes a) a written phase, in which participants submit pleadings (depending on the Jurisdiction to which the case at hand belongs) and b) an oral phase before a Moot Court, which is composed of legal scholars and real judges.
