ELSA Komotini

ELSA Komotini is one of the three local groups in the ELSA and ELSA Greece network, based at the Law School of the Democritus University of Thrace, in the city of Komotini and the wider region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

The initiative to found it began on 10 December 2002, when 23 students signed its Statute, which was ratified on 27 May 2003, completing the procedure required to establish it as an association. Its seat is on the 2^nd floor of the Law School building, where a dedicated space is provided for its activities, for supporting its members and for storing the necessary materials.

Following the spirit of ELSA Greece & ELSA International, ELSA Komotini works to offer young lawyers, as well as the local community, high-quality academic activities aimed at familiarity with complex and specialised legal subjects and with the legal systems of other countries, and at fostering mutual understanding and social awareness through cooperation in the field of legal science.

ELSA’s annual programme allows many students to take part in interactive academic activities, attend seminars & conferences on current and specialised topics, take part in the Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP) and visit places of legal interest both in Greece and abroad (international organisations, the National School of Judges, training institutes, public services and law firms). In addition, the DUTH Law School is represented through ELSA Komotini in the National Moot Court Competition (E.D.E.D.) and in international moot courts such as the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition (WTO) and the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition (EHRMCC).

Key landmarks for ELSA Komotini are the purely student-run law journal “Ypagogi”, published twice a year since 2016, and the organisation of the Winter Law School (Winter ELSA Law School – WELS), an international academic activity that attracts students, young lawyers and academics from all over the world to Komotini for a week, to delve into a specific branch of law through lectures, workshops and interactive teaching methods of a high academic standard.
